Ukrainian-Hungarian Pedagogical Dialogue: The Hungarian Embassy Honored Theresa Brunswick and Sofia Rusova

On October 3, 2025, the Hungarian Embassy in Ukraine hosted a solemn event dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the birth of Theresa Brunswick and honoring the memory of Sofia Rusova, outstanding teachers and founders of preschool education.

The event was opened by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Hungary to Ukraine Antal Heizer, who emphasized the importance of cultural and educational cooperation between Ukraine and Hungary. In his speech, Vasyl Kremen, the President of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine and the NAES of Ukraine, emphasized the symbolism of the combination of the names of Theresa Brunswick and Sofia Rusova - two outstanding figures united by the idea of ​​humanistic education, love for children and the desire to renew society through education. He noted that the pedagogical ideas of these two women resonate with the values ​​of modern Ukrainian education.

The scientific part of the event featured prominent scientists from the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine – Olga Sukhomlynska, Academician of the National Academy of EDucational Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Sciences in Pedagogy, Professor (report “Vasyl Sukhomlynsky: An Example of Ukrainian-Hungarian Dialogue”); Oleksandr Mikhno, Director of the Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine, Doctor of Sciences in Pedagogy (report “Two Educators – One Mission: Teresa Brunsvik and Sofia Rusova as Founders of Preschool Education”); Olga Reipolska, Doctor of Sciences in Pedagogy, Professor, Head of the Preschool Education Department of the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy  of Educational Sciences of Ukraine (report “Preschool Education in Ukraine under Martial Law: Challenges and Prospects”).

An important part of the event was the speech of Eva Heizerne Hegedusz, diplomat of the Embassy of Hungary for Culture and Education, who presented a historical background on the legacy of Theresa of Brunswick and showed a video greeting by Cornelia Thom, representative of the Hungarian Theresa of Brunswick Memorial Committee.

The event became an example of fruitful international cooperation in the field of education, science and culture, demonstrating the commonality of humanistic ideas that unite Ukraine and Hungary in understanding the legacy of two great educators - Theresa of Brunswick and Sofia Rusova. She also emphasized the importance of constant Ukrainian-Hungarian pedagogical dialogue aimed at preserving and developing European educational values, humanism and mutual respect between peoples.
