Strengthening the interaction of state institutions for the prevention and postvention of suicide in educational institutions

As part of the events dedicated to the World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2021, an Interdisciplinary Round Table "Strengthening the interaction of state institutions for the prevention and postvention of suicide in educational institutions" was held in Kyiv. The event was organized by the Institute of Social and Political Psychology of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine together with the Educational Ombudsman of Ukraine.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in 2020, 6,103 people died of intentional self-harm in Ukraine, including 164 people aged 5 to 19. The average age-standardized suicide rate in Ukraine in 2019 was 17.7 people per 100,000 population, while in the world this figure is almost twice lower - 9 people per 100,000 population. The severity of this problem requires an immediate search for effective mechanisms to suicide prevention and avoidance and self-harm among children and adolescents.

One such mechanism is the development and approval at the state level of postman protocols - a system of interagency measures for the social and psychological support of individuals, groups and communities after suicide - in order to prevent further suicides. Unlike most developed countries in the world, such protocols do not exist in Ukraine, which requires their urgent development.

World practice shows that each individual case of suicide affects an average of 135 people from the immediate environment of the suicide, and the level of post-traumatic stress disorders and clusters of suicidal behavior is growing significantly among them. Thus, fasting as an accompaniment and support of a group of people after a suicide (and its attempt) at the same time meets the task of preventing possible suicides.

During the round table there was a presentation and discussion of the framework developed by scientists of the Institute of Social and Political Psychology of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine.
