
On May 15, the meeting of the Presidium of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine considered the issue “On the results of research into the problems of STEM education in gymnasiums and lyceums carried out in the Department of General Secondary Education and Digitalization of Educational Systems of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine”.
The report was delivered by Tetyana Zasekina, the Deputy Director for Scientific and Experimental Work of the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine.
The report states that STEM education as a strategic direction of reforming Ukrainian schools has been implemented in educational practice since 2016. As a significant factor in the integration of knowledge, ensuring its practical orientation, forming students′ critical, engineering, technological and innovative thinking, developing key competencies in the field of natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering and technology.
To fulfill the tasks of scientific and methodological support for STEM education, the Department of General Secondary Education and Digitalization of Educational Systems of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine timely carried out the necessary scientific and organizational work to launch relevant research at the Institute of Pedagogy and the Institute of Gifted Child, the implementation of the results of which into modern educational practice of general secondary and specialized educational institutions of a scientific orientation continues.
In particular, a STEM education department was created at the Institute of Pedagogy and during 2022-2024 the study "Scientific and methodological support for the implementation of STEM education technology in gymnasiums" was carried out; in the same period at the Institute of Gifted Child, a study out "Forms and methods of teaching gifted students in the conditions of implementing STEM/STEAM education in institutions of specialized education of a scientific orientation" was carried. Two doctoral studies are being carried out within the framework of the specified issues.
According to the results of the conducted research, the following was substantiated and implemented:
• scientific and methodological principles of STEM education as a pedagogical technology and ways of solving the problem of designing and implementing STEM education in a gymnasium were proposed;
• a model of implementing STEM/STEAM education in institutions of specialized education of a scientific orientation was developed and organizational forms and methods of teaching gifted students in the conditions of combining formal and informal secondary education were proposed;
• the effectiveness of the proposed approaches to implementing STEM education in institutions of general secondary education and STEM/STEAM education in institutions of specialized education of a scientific orientation was tested and verified;
• educational and methodological support for STEM education in gymnasiums has been created, in particular, a typical educational and model curriculum for grades 5-9, methodological manuals and recommendations for their implementation in educational institutions of various types have been prepared; didactic support for STEM/STEAM education in scientific lyceums has been developed;
• methods for diagnosing teachers′ readiness for innovative activity in the context of the implementation of STEM education technologies, etc. have been proposed.
The theoretical and practical achievements of scientists have been reflected in 2 methodological manuals, 3 methodological recommendations, 14 articles in publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus and other scientometric databases, 38 articles in scientific professional publications of Ukraine, 140 publications in materials of foreign and domestic conferences.
The research results were tested and presented at 34 different scientific and practical events, including the following:
• round table "STEAM education: from theory to practice" (Kyiv, March 24, 2023,
about 4000 participants);
• international scientific and practical conference "STEAM education: from theory to practice" (Kyiv, June 12-14, 2024, over 2000 participants);
• international scientific and practical internet conference "Current aspects of the development of STEAM education in the context of European integration" (Kropyvnytskyi, April 24, 2025, over 1000 participants).
