The National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine (NAES of Ukraine) is a higher state academic body which acts to promote academic research in the area of education, founded by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on March 4, 1992. In 2010 the Decree of the President of Ukraine granted the Academy national status.

The Academy is actively involved in the methodological, scientific and methodical maintenance of educational development, working out its legislative and normative base, creating the modernization concepts of general, vocational and higher education, improving the efficiency of the educational process.

Vasyl Kremen, the full member (academician) of the National Academy of Sciences and the NAES of Ukraine, is the President of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, Volodymyr Luhovyi, the full member (academician), is the First Vice President, Andriy Gurzhiy, the full member (academician), is the Vice President and  Mikhaylo Burda, the full member (academician),is  the Chief Scientific Secretary.

The Academys main objectives are:

  • development of  a new philosophy of education;
  • reasoning of  aims and ways of development of the national education system;
  • complex   analysis of mental  development of children and young people, forming their modern world-view, moral and civic position;
  • creation a theory of holistic personality development;
  • development ofmethodology and theory of educational content and learning process in different types of educational institutions;           
  • creation of manuals and textbooks, training aids of new generation;
  • working up national standards and assessment system quality education at different levels;
  • research current issues of information and computerization of educational process;
  • research of problems of professional, higher and adult education;
  • development of special education;
  • training and certification of scientific, scientific and pedagogical staff of higher qualification;
  • advanced training (postgraduate education);
  • scientific information support for the innovative development of the national educational and psychological science and education;
  • conservation, research, scientific interpretation and presentation of history and current state of national education and psycho-educational thought.

Subordinated institutions of the NAES of Ukraine research institutes, centres and the University of Educational Management combined into five departments:

  • General pedagogy and philosophy of education (Olga Sukhomlynska, full member (academician)-secretary);
  • Psychology, age physiology and defectology (Serhiy Maksymenko, full member (academician)-secretary);
  • General secondary education (Oleksandr Lyashenko, full member (academician)-secretary);
  • Professional and adult education (Nellia Nychkalo, full member (academician)-secretary);
  • Higher education (Mykola Yevtukh, full member (academician)-secretary).

As a part of the Academy are: Institute of Pedagogy, H.S. Kostyuk Institute of Psychology, Institute of  Pedagogical Education and Adult Education, Institute of Problems of Education, Institute of Special Pedagogy, Institute of Social and Political Psychology, Institute of Higher Education, Institute of Information Technologies and Teaching Aids, Institute of Vocational Education, Institute of Gifted Child, State Higher Educational Institution University of Educational Management, Ukrainian Scientific and Methodical Centre of Practical Psychology and Social Work, Training and Scientific Centre of Vocational Education, V.O.Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Pedagogical Library of Ukraine, Pedagogical Museum of Ukraine.

The total number of the NAES of Ukraine is 146 people, including 61 full members (academicians) and 85 corresponding members. In addition, the Academy elected 38 foreign members, 10 honorary full members (academicians). 1430 scientists, including 236 DSc and 547 PhD, work in subordinated institutions of the NAES of Ukraine. Scientific and scientific and pedagogical staff of the institutions and members of the Academy perform 278 research works in 42 research areas. An important part of scientific research is an experimental activity carried out during 145 experiments at different levels, including 32 experiments of Ukrainian nationwide level and six experiments of general academic level.  The Academys experimental grounds are preschool, secondary, out-of-school, vocational and higher education institutions.

According to the results of research the members of the Academy and scientists of subordinated institutions annually publish more than 3 thousand works, including around 100 monographs, almost 200 textbooks, more than 170 methodical aids and recommendations, 40 dictionaries and reference books, about 120 collections of scientific works, more than 70 curricula and concepts; approximately 200 mass scientific and pedagogical events are held. Encyclopaedia of Education, the White Book of National Education of Ukraine, the National Report on the status and development of education in Ukraine, Collected works in 5 volumes devoted to the 20th anniversary of the NAPS of Ukraine were published in 2008-2012.

The Academys main periodicals are Pedagogychna Gazeta and scientific and theoretical and informative magazine Pedagogy and Psychology. In general the Academy and its scientific institutions are founders and co-founders of 54 publications, including two newspapers, 25 scientific magazines, 27 collections of scientific papers and six electronic scientific professional issues. 67% of items are scientific professional journals in the field of pedagogical, psychological, philosophical and economic sciences. Among the scientific periodicals The Path of Education, Problems of a modern textbook, Comparative educational studies, Actual problems of Psychology, Adult Education: Theory, Experience and Prospects, Vocational Education, Out-of-school training and education, Arts and education, Defectology. Special child: training and education, Scientific studies in social and political psychology, Higher Education of Ukraine,  Philosophy of Education, Information technology and training aids, Training and education of gifted personality: theory and practice, Journal of postgraduate education, Pedagogy and psychology of professional education, Science and education and others. 

The Interagency Council for the coordination of research for pedagogical and psychological sciences in Ukraine, which annually reviews and approves over 1500 DSc and PhD theses, acts at the Presidium of the NAES of Ukraine.

The scientific and scientific and pedagogical staff training at postgraduate and doctoral courses at the institutions of the Academy, where 543 postgraduate students are studying and 70 persons are preparing for doctors degree. There are 17 specialized academic councils for DSc and PhD theses in the area of pedagogical, psychological and philosophical sciences.

The NAES of Ukraine cooperates with Verkhovna Radas Committees, the Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Social Policy, other executive authorities of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences and national branch academies of sciences of Ukraine, universities and other educational institutions and public organizations.

Fruitful cooperation is carried with scientific and educational institutions of foreign countries (Byelorussia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Portuguese Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, the USA etc.) and with international organizations such as: the UNESCO, the World Bank, the European Union, the Council of Europe, the European Training Foundation, the American Councils for International Education, the British Council, DVV International that promote Ukraines integration into the European and world educational area, enriching psychological and educational sciences.
